Everyday Lives PDF Print E-mail

Everyday Lives is the core philosophy and framework of the State of Pennsylvania’s Office of Developmental Programs (ODP).  Originally introduced in 1991, Everyday Lives is deeply rooted in the concept of Self-Determination & Positive Approaches.  The fundamental concept of Everyday Lives is that, with the support of family and friends, individuals with disabilities decide how to live their lives, what supports they need, and how they want to spend the money in their individual budgets.  It also means that they are responsible for their decisions and actions.

In the development of this philosophy, individuals and families identified the following components that must be present for an Everyday Life: Accountability, Choice, Collaboration, Community Inclusion, Contributing to the Community, Control, Freedom, Individuality, Mentoring, Quality, Relationships, Safety, Stability & Success. As this is the foundation to today’s system, every decision, rule or regulation created by ODP or those working on their behalf needs to consider and ensure that the impact of that decision, rule or regulation continues to support and promote the ideals of Everyday Lives.
